As a renowned music conference MIDEM is getting closer, we had a pleasure of interviewing MIDEM’s director Alexandre Deniot, about the exciting and innovative aspects the attendees can expect at MIDEM this year.
MIDEM has been home of the global music community for over 50 years now. What are the key elements to its success and longevity in your opinion?
Emociónis a vibrant and unique multi-national act, comprised of 5 world-class virtuoso musicians. Originally inspired and united by a passion for the sounds and rhythms of Tango Nuevo, this ensemble truly celebrates the universal power of music. The group’s nationalities reflect the global fusion of their repertoire – a Lebanese singer, Peruvian violinist, Venezuelan cellist, Belgian pianist and German percussionist. Having studied at Europe’s most eminent conservatoires, they played for prestigious European orchestras before meeting in the Qatar Philharmonic.
The Happiness Pause is a monthly show exploring the concept of happiness in our daily and working lives. Presenter Emma Bartholomew takes time out of her day job representing international clients in the music industry to press pause and chat to guests about where they find their happiness and to share a playlist of mood-shifting, uplifting tracks from all genres and eras.
The show interweaves conversation with the song choices of Emma and her guests, all of which have been chosen for their meaning and uplifting impact.

MENA Panel at #AIMConnected It was a true privilege to moderate the Middle East & North Africa Spotlight panel at the AIM Connected conference yesterday. We enjoyed a really interesting conversation about the potential of the region, thanks to the vast experience and insightful contributions from the panel: Katara Studios’ Mazen Murad, Simsara Music’s Sarah El Miniawy, On The Corner Records’ Pete Buckenham & SACEM’s Habib Achour. The consensus was that, if we truly engage as an international industry & work closely with local partners, the potential for greater collaboration with & exciting growth for this market is great. Thanks to Association of Independent Music (AIM) for a brilliantly organised event.

Are you an aspiring songwriter or producer struggling to get the right attention among the throng of peers and competitors?
It’s no secret that standing out in the music industry is difficult with artists spending more time on PR than writing songs. So, in an attempt to help educate the next generation of songwriters and producers, Universal Music is offering the chance to meet their publishing team.
The business to business music event Marché International du Disque et de l’Edition Musicale (Midem) is inviting artist, songwriters and producers to apply to attend mentoring meetings with the Universal Publishing team.
The event takes place in June and successful applicants will have access to exclusive talks where the publishing team will offer insight into the role of a music publisher today and how that role has evolved in recent years.
We wrote about British startup ClicknClear last year (when it was known as Clickamix) with its plans to license music for use in performance sports like cheerleading, figure skating and gymnastics. The company has since started working with more than 100 music rightsholders, including Universal Music Publishing, Warner Music and BMG.
Sony/ATV boss Jon Platt could be excused for a slight feeling of deja vu when he collected his second Publisher of the Year trophy of the week at a PRO's Pop Awards. In this instance the PRO in question was ASCAP (it was the fifth time in seven years the company has taken this particular honor); SATV took home 19 most-performed song trophies, six of them co-written by Songwriter of the Year Louis Bell. Another of the pubco's writers, ELO mastermind Jeff Lynne, received the Founder Award.

Board any Qatar Airways flight and you will experience the music of Qatari composer, Dana Al Fardan. Being appointed the airline’s Official Composer was just one of the highlights of 2017 for Dana, not just at home in Doha, but internationally. Another was writing a track for Syrian superstar, Assala Nasri’s latest album. The song, Sandoo’ Segheer, has enjoyed huge global success with over 4 million plays across Spotify and YouTube.
Coversion, the sync-focused covers catalogue, is delighted to announce a sync partnership with Instant Love, the new release from Instant Records, part of The Orchard group. Particularly apt in the month the UK has celebrated the female contribution to the music industry with AIM’s annual Women In Music conference, the album showcases female renditions of songs traditionally sung by men about women, breathing new life into a collection of iconic material, which has collectively enjoyed decades of success.
The 2nd part of the piece on music PR tips I was asked to write by the brilliant team at Synchtank's Synchblog. Discussed some of this advice in a masterclass I delivered to students studying at ACM's Metropolis Studios campus yesterday. Very inspiring group of emerging artists..
In part 1 of this series, Music PR specialist Emma Bartholomew took us through5 key considerations for building your PR strategy. In part 2 she looks at when to hire a PR, what to expect from a PR campaign, and specific advice for running sync-specific PR campaigns.
On 18th December Qatar celebrates its National Day, marking 47 years of independence from its status as a British protectorate. Perhaps this is an opportune moment to take a look at elements of an often misunderstood Gulf state that tends to get ignored in the shadow of its brasher and more familiar neighbours.
Great to see Reed MIDEM - a member of Reed Exhibitions introducing a Live Summit for MIDEM 2018. It's looking like a dynamic programme for next year's conference, with plenty of quality live content to add to the usual cocktail of panels, networking and, of course, the parties...
This year’s FMF partnered with events app, Second Screen, allowing delegates to tap into all the conference details on their mobile devices as they navigated the packed schedule. Highlights of the 2017 agenda included dynamic panels led by entrepreneur Jack Horner and featuring presentations from Georg Herlitz (Creative Director & acting Head of Music Network, United Screens), and Nic Yeeles (Co-Founder / CEO, Peg) on the ever-shifting landscape of Influencer Marketing.
